Democrat Joe Prather was already looking at apartments in D.C. when the spot incorporating this effect was aired. His defeat foreshadowed the loss of Democratic control in Congress less than six months later. You can see a video of the morph effect or download a poster.

Newsday used my Transition ‘94 poster to illustrate their lead story on Rudy’s first Mayoral Inauguration on December 31, 1993. A PDF of the poster is available here.

In 1993 I started using software based on the morph technology that Industrial Light & Magic created for the film Willow.

Around Thanksgiving the idea of a promotional poster for friends and clients sprang almost fully-formed as the poster above.

I mailed 500 copies around the country, and one landed on the desk of Susan Molinari’s former chief of staff, then the Director of Communications at the NRCC. He thought the technology of interest.

I visited the RNC building a few weeks later, armed with a video of morphing in action. They were blown away.

In May of 1994, when Ron Lewis found himself competitive with Joe Prather in Kentucky’s 2nd Congressional District, I was asked to morph Prather into Bill Clinton, then at his absolute lowest popularity.

My morphing was used to elect the first Republican to that seat since Abe slept in the Lincoln Bedroom.

In the months after the Special Election, I was called on to morph candidates in several other races, but the technique quickly became overused in the political world.

With a compelling story to tell, morphing still has a lot of potential in some future race... somewhere.
